The importance of using an end grain sealer
How do you ensure good protection for your end grain wood? By using a sealer you provide a good base before you apply the paint.
End grain wood must always be well protected. End grain wood absorbs more moisture content than the horizontal parts of the wood. This is because the fibers and pores of the wood are open after sawing or milling the wood.
If a total paint system is applied, we recommend that you first treat the end grains properly with our Hydrolux End-Grain Sealer for example. This will ensure that moisture cannot enter the end grain and will not cause the problems you can see on the photos below, where there is rising moisture pulling upwards from the end grain. Additionally, you can see on the 2nd photo that the nails that were used have not been properly treated with a transparent filler. These fairly simple problems, which usually lead to major financial losses, can easily be prevented.
In the photo below you see an Oak window in combination with an aluminium bead. The Oak has been discoloured and a defect is starting from the end-grain. The producer of this window admitted that an end grain sealer was not used. This shows again that the use of an end grain sealer is key for the total quality of your windows, doors, or other wooden components.
