    To achieve the best possible result with the coatings system there are some procedures and ancillary products that are necessary

    Surface Preparation

    The substrate must be prepared by either a suitable quality of planing or where this is not sufficient to provide a smooth finish for subsequent coatings, then we would recommend the surface is prepared by sanding with abrasives between P120 and P180. Ensure the substrate is clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, grease, silicone and wax.

    Minor irregularities in wood, like cracks and permissible knots should be repaired. Anker Stuy provide the 19-0257 Ankolux Woodfiller, for this purpose. This is a fast drying, solvent free all-round filler for indoor and outdoor, for filling defects with a maximum dimension of 2mm.For larger repairs of damaged areas greater than 2mm then a traditional two component filler may be used. Always check that these materials are compatible by coating a test area that has been filled with these materials.

    End grain sealing

    End grain sections on joinery where the cut end is exposed are more absorbent to moisture uptake than the other parts of the joinery section. These are by far the most vulnerable areas of the joinery item. Spray coatings can wet these areas out but to get better penetration into these often rough surfaces it is necessary to brush the coating into the end grain. The substance used to seal the end grain is more closed to moisture than the coating system because a complete barrier against moisture is recommended at these points.
    To seal the end-grain we recommend using our 25-0352 Hydrolux End-Grain sealer. This not only gives the moisture protection required but also helps to fill up this end grain section for an even smoother finish.

    V-joint sealing

    V-joints have a small amount of exposed end grain on them that requires sealing. It is also likely that there will be a small amount of movement on these joints that can expose the timber inside the joint. To seal the end grain and remain intact after some small movement a flexible sealant material is required. For this purpose we recommend our 25-0353 V-joint sealer. As well as at v-joints it can be applied to other joints between two sections where a very small gap is present to avoid moisture uptake by capillary action at the joint.

    Equipment cleaning

    Clean equipment is essential to the smooth running of a spray operation. Anker Stuy Coatings provide a special cleaner which is called 25-0380 AW Glycol Cleaner. This material can be diluted to wash through spray equipment but can also be used undiluted on difficult to remove paint residues on the outside of the equipment and other areas. Obviously because our coatings are water based you can also clean with warm water. Liquid detergent can be added to water, but always rinse down the equipment at the end of any cleaning (either when using the Glycol Cleaner or detergent solution) with fresh warm water to remove any of the cleaning residues.

    Wet film thickness measurements

    To ensure you are providing the joinery products with adequate protection it is essential to know that you are applying the correct film thickness of coatings. If you do not apply enough the coating system may be more susceptible to moisture uptake or early erosion. It is also important not to apply too much coating as this can extend drying times, waste coatings or lead to unsightly runs in the finish. To measure the wet film thickness we recommend using a Wet Film Gauge. The advantage of this is that you can get a reading while you are still spraying and correct any lower than required film loadings. At Anker Stuy Coatings you can order a validated wet film gauge.
