Redecorating and repainting wooden windows and doors with Hydrotop, a water-based brushable coating from Anker Stuy Coatings, requires careful preparation and application to achieve a high-quality finish. Follow these step-by-step instructions for the best results:

    Materials and Tools You'll Need:

    1. Hydrotop water-based brushable coating by Anker Stuy Coatings
    2. Sandpaper (various grits: 80, 120, 220)
    3. Paint scraper
    4. Frencken Wood filler
    5. Putty knife
    6. Primer (if required)
    7. Paintbrushes
    8. Roller
    9. Drop cloths
    10. Painter's tape
    11. Paint tray
    12. Stir stick
    13. Cleaning rags
    14. Mild detergent
    15. Sanding block or sponge
    16. Safety goggles
    17. Respirator mask (if needed)
    18. Gloves
    19. Ladder or step stool (if necessary)

    Step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Prepare the Work Area

    • Lay down drop cloths to protect the surrounding area from paint splatters.
    • Remove any hardware (handles, knobs, etc.) from the windows and doors.

    Step 2: Surface Preparation

    • If there's existing paint, scrape off loose or flaking paint using a paint scraper.
    • Sand the wooden surfaces with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots or imperfections.
    • Follow up with 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the surfaces.
    • Finish by sanding with 220-grit sandpaper to create a smooth and clean surface.
    • Clean the surfaces with a damp cloth or sponge to remove dust and debris.

    Step 3: Repair Any Damage

    • Fill any cracks, holes, or gaps with wood filler using a putty knife.
    • Allow the wood filler to dry completely, following the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Sand the patched areas smooth once the filler is dry.

Step 4: Apply Primer (if necessary)

    • If you are painting over bare wood or using a significantly different color, apply a suitable primer. Follow the primer manufacturer's instructions for drying time.

Step 5: Stir the Hydrotop Coating

    • Open the Hydrotop can and stir the paint thoroughly using a stir stick. Make sure the paint is well mixed for an even finish.

    Step 6: Mask and Protect

    • Use painter's tape to mask off areas that you want to protect from paint, such as glass and adjacent walls.

    Step 7: Start Painting

    • Using a high-quality brush, start by cutting in around the edges of the windows and doors.
    • Then, use a roller to apply Hydrotop to the larger, flat areas. Work in small, manageable sections.
    • Apply the paint evenly and make sure there are no drips or runs.

    Step 8: Additional Coats

    • Allow the first coat to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Apply a second coat of Hydrotop if necessary for full coverage. Most water-based coatings like Hydrotop may require a second coat for a durable finish.

    Step 9: Clean Up

    • Clean your brushes and tools with water immediately after use.

    Step 10: Final Inspection

    • Once the paint has dried, carefully remove the painter's tape.
    • Inspect the windows and doors to ensure a smooth and even finish.

    Step 11: Reattach Hardware

    • After the paint has completely dried, reattach any hardware that was removed.

    Step 12: Dispose of Waste

    • Properly dispose of any used paint cans and materials according to your local regulations.

Following these steps and using Anker Stuy Coatings' Hydrotop will help you achieve a beautiful, durable finish on your wooden windows and doors. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the paint can for specific drying times and other recommendations.
