Important Information on Colour Matching
We understand how important it is to achieve the right colour match—especially when you’re working to meet a client’s expectations. Colour matching is a detailed process with many influencing factors, and we want to provide complete transparency about how we work and what you can expect.
Why Colours May Vary
Our tinted topcoats are formulated to closely match recognised colour references. However, slight variations can occur between our matches and those of other suppliers due to differences in pigment formulations and manufacturing processes. We cannot accept responsibility for any discrepancies when comparing our colour match to that of another supplier’s product.
Our pigments are manufactured by Anker Stuy to maintain a high level of consistency across batches. However, even when using the same colour reference, differences in tone or depth may occur when compared to other suppliers’ products.
What Affects Colour Appearance?
Even with advanced spectrometers and colour-matching technology, variations in final colour appearance are normal due to several factors, including:
- Lighting conditions
- Sheen or finish (e.g., gloss, satin, matt)
- Surface or substrate type (e.g., timber, MDF, metal)
- Application method (e.g., spray, brush, roller)
- The quality or accuracy of alternative suppliers’ matches or swatches
Translucent Finishes
Translucent finishes are particularly influenced by the timber’s natural grain and tone. Variations such as knots, light and dark areas, and differing absorption rates can alter the final appearance. For the closest possible result, a physical sample of the actual timber being used must be provided.
Without a physical sample of the timber, it is not possible to guarantee an accurate translucent colour match.
Our Quality Commitment
We use Delta E (ΔE) colour difference measurements to assess the accuracy of every match. A ΔE value below 2.0 is typically imperceptible to the human eye. If, upon review before application, the colour exceeds ΔE 2.0, we will replace your tinted topcoat free of charge.
This replacement guarantee applies only to matches against recognised colour cards and fan decks. Bespoke matches to alternative suppliers’ products require a physical sample and are fully chargeable.
Best Practice Recommendations
- Provide a physical sample of the timber or surface whenever possible
- Test samples on the actual substrate or timber for the project
- Assess the finish in the environment and lighting conditions where it will be installed
- Follow all recommendations in the Technical Data Sheet, especially regarding film builds and application method
